Thanks to all for the info about spyware. You have answered my questions and the two big mysteries remaining may have less than mysterious explainations.
The site redirect I mentioned and Bruce Johnson asked me about: I sent a spam report about a bounce with a hidden .PIF file to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] and got an email response directing me to: http://spamcop.net/ Earthlink says that this is not an affliliated site. They also said the proper e-dress is [EMAIL PROTECTED] So it's not a case of redirect just mistyping on my part and agressive marketing on spamcops part. Or an incorrect earthlink tech guy. The second remaining issue is the occasional "network operation in progress" prompt. More than one of you suggested that it sometimes takes a while to send e-mail even after the e-mail client says all mail has been sent. Though when it happens, it happens a suspiciously long time (2 to 5 minutes) after the mail has been "sent" I defer to your expertise. So the NSA or Romanian mob isn't after my many, many important secrets after all! My paranoia is, at least temporarily, assuaged and, once again, PCI-list saves the world!
