I've had the least trouble by sticking with an Apple ROM drive.

Some of your problems may well be drive "Driver" error-related.

Use a utility like a Norton Disk Doctor or the H.D. Toolkit to check
the errors. 

You must boot from a floppy or external hard drive to facilitate repair.
Make sure to check the hard drive media. It may be damaged. If you use the
H.D. Toolkit, let it run for at least an hour.

Check that the memory installed is enough and not improper or mismatched.
Try running at 128 or 64MB. See if that doesn't make things a little
smoother.
