Hey all. Hope you can help me out. I have a 7300/180
with 256 mb, w/8.6 OS. I have been having a problem
with it freezing up randomly( I think anyhow)

Install MacsBug, so you can get a look at what caused the failure.

What else is on your SCSI chain? Make sure your SCSI chain is properly terminated. Badly terminated chains often cause "random" Finder deaths.

question #2...on a whim I ran disk first aid on the
8.5 install CD, and under the category where it said
it was checking the catalog file it said "custom Icon
missing 430,155 , custom icon missing 431,154. What's
up with that?

Rudimentary holes in your file system, basically broken links to the icon files. Probably caused by all those freezes. Run a couple of repair passes with DFA.

question #3...I have a 4gig IBM HD DFHS S4F on the
SCSI 1 that I tried to install the apple driver after
formatting. It told me that it was a non-apple drive
and need to have the correct driver(duh) Today I used
HD Toolkit 3.0 to install its driver on this HD,
seemed to work, but when checking it on the 8.5 disk
utilities it told me that it is not a supported drive.
Any problems with this or should I just ignore it?

Apple's tools will always complain the drive is unsupported. Doesn't matter, if you've got a decent 3rd party driver on it.

HDTK 3.0 or 3.0.2? Version 3.0.2 is the minimum recommended version for Mac OS 8.6. There is a free updater available. After applying it, update the driver on that hard drive. Of course, always do a full backup before updating any HD drivers.
