Performa based PCI Macs do not run nearly as fast as true PCI Macs designed
from the ground up by virtue of their speed limited 32-bit data path. A
7200/120 or 7600/132 might be better choices for your needs. By upgrading
to least OS 8.1 you strike a balance between performance and existing
resources (cpu, RAM, L2, HD). U-ATA133 controllers maxes sustained data
transfer rates to 27-28 MB/sec with standard 601/604 cpus; up to 32 MB/sec
with faster G3 upgrades. I read in XLR8yourmac.com that HD cache of 4 MB is
the minimum before noticeable performance is achieved with some drives.
