<< Okay, I'll warn you now that I'm a noob when it comes to Macs. I got
hooked last year on an SE, picked up an LCIII which I've had fun with, and I
decided to get an 8600 for some actual serious work, instead of hobbying. My 8600
(like most, I presume) has the A/V connectors on the back. How do I use
these?! I don't even know enough yet about the machine to know if I'm missing an
extension, a program, a control panel or some grim combination of the three.
My machine came out of a newsroom (I think all of mine have, actually), so the
A/V hookups were never used at all there. It's currently loaded with OS 8.1,
and I'm wondering if moving up in OSes will also solve some of my problems.

It depends on what you want to do. Audio or video and in what form? You
have RCA jacks back there and maybe s-video, plus audio and serial for some
applications (e.g., midi.) Input or output to what devices? Open your sound
control panel and you'll be able to access the RCA jacks ands other audio inputs
and outputs. The Apple Video player is also probably on your hard drive
somewhere -- check it out. How much ram and v-ram do you have? If you have video
editing ambitions you'll need a video card and more softwware. In this day of
firewire, it will be somewhat archaic. Audio is better -- but you may still
need to supplement depending on what you want to do.
