OK, first off I'll issue a quick newbie alert :-) I'm not new to computing, but I am still new to the world of the Mac - plenty of DOS, Windows, OS/2 and Linux experience though.
I've been working on getting my hands on the newest Mac hardware I can,
largely for testing websites, but also because the end goal of OS X with
the BSD base sounds nice and well worth a good in depth look. I also
have customers using this platform, so it would help alot there too. The
newest I've had until now is a Performa 6320 that I've done a clean
install of MacOS 8 on and then found the combination of old browser and
my lack of experience combined with too limited time has held me back.
Anyway, I've just managed to get my hands on a slightly newer 7600 box with 64M RAM, 2G HD and 170MHz processor. From a quick look on LEM the processor itself sounds an oddball for the model, but the spec could have been quoted wrong.
So my questions are:
- what is the best OS for this, I'm assuming the installed 9.1?
Do not assume, but 9.1 in only 64megs is really a pig.
- what are the recommended upgrade paths for it, if any?
I've been told it uses DIMMs, but not standard ones and I belive that
there are G3 upgrade cards available that may just give me a leg up into
the bottom end of OS X.
They use 5V dimms, pretty cheap at <http://www.datamem.com> $23 for 128 meg ones.
There are a number of G3 and G4 upgrades for it.
Were I you, though, I'd look for a beige G3, B&W G3 or even a older G4 for a foray into OSX. I had OSX running on my G4 upgraded 7600, and it's MUCH better on my newer machines (home is a Beige G3 with 768 mb and a 466mhz G4, work is a AGP G4 upgraded with an 800 mhz processor, nice.)
