Thanks to all who replied, I've picked up the machine now (acquired
which is why it isn't a newer one) and after a play I will no doubt be
back with more specific questions. So far it seems I have a 166MHz 604e
with 8x 8M 5V DIMMs to start from.

Memory and disk will be my first moves given that I have some spare
available (although I'm not so sure about 5V ones so I may have to track
down a UK supplier unless it is cheaper to import). Once I've got that
hang of things on this freebie I expect I will look to invest in a newer
box rather than use a processor upgrade (unless I acquire one of find
one cheap!). I think this box will be the boost I've been looking for
though as the older 030, 040 and 1st gen PPC boxes I have haven't been
able to run a new enough version of Mac OS for me to make significant
use of (no doubt great for those who have been using a Mac for years,
but when starting afresh the lack of an up to date browser for a start
is a hurdle to the research, download, experiment process).

Two specific questions since I'm typing anyway:

- I have a couple of old PCI 8M ATI cards, would these likely be better
than the Matrox Millenium, and hopefully not need a firmware flash?

- the box has a built in network card, what are my options if I want to
use a spare PCI slot for a 10/100 NIC, are they fairly compatible and
drivers easily available (again I have spare ones)?
