Sounds suspiciously like Windows tech support to me. IF they can't afford a server to filter incoming mail for viruses, or they can't get virus protection on the Windows PCs, your work environment is already in a world of hurt.
Doesn't the Mac use a Creator identifier string built into the files anyway to show files it recognizes? That way, an Illustrator file will show an icon relating to what program opens it and a Stuffit archive shows the stuffed file icon. Windows issues those icons based strictly on the first file extension after the . (.exe,.doc,.etc...), so that it is easy to slip in viruses and malicious code using double extensions (malware.doc.exe, for example).
