I wonder why I wasn't able to import the NS bookmark file into iCab (maybe because I renamed it?), but was able to drag the NS bookmark file into iCab?

The importer in iCab doesn't care what the file is named.

The file probably contained a corruption or two, accumulated from crashes and such. iCab is very picky about bad HTML.

Open the old bookmark file directly with iCab. Then use the pop-up menu to add any missing links you want to your iCab bookmark file.

THEN open the iCab bookmark window (cmd-J) and just close the window - that's the only way to make iCab save the bookmark changes.
