Dan set me straight on Netscape 7 ;

Well a quick look at the NS 7 DL page says NS 7 needs OS X .

Netscape 7.02 is available for both Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. (not sure about OS 8, but with an up-to-date CarbonLib it might run)

Netscape 7.1 is available only for Mac OS X.

Netscape is now based on Gecko, the same engine Mozilla uses. The WaMCom hacked Mozilla 1.3.1, for OS 9, is a *newer* build than Netscape 7.02.

All reports to the contrary must have omitted a crucial element.

You just didn't read all the postings.

But the question arises again. Even if NS 7 worked with OS 9 given the processor speed range that most of us on this list probably use ( say
75 - 450 MHz ) wouldn't we still perceive it as slower than the browser we are used to? Again because of the code bloat .

Bloat is generally a problem, but when they went to the updated Gecko engine they got quite a speed boost. Some of the open source folx put in a lot of hard work to optimize it.

Netscape 7.02 is quite a bit faster on my PowerMac 7300/180 than Netscape 6 or even 4.8. Mozilla 1.3.1 is even faster and more stable!

Right now, I'm using iCab 2.9.7b182 and WaMCom Mozilla 1.3.1. Gots 'em both runnin all the time. For most things, they run neck-in-neck for speed, but on some sites Mozilla leaves iCab in the dirt.

Thanks Dan for clearing this up for me . I've been very busy.

I will look for v.7.02.
