Well a quick look at the NS 7 DL page says NS 7 needs OS X .

*COUGH* Ahem. Are you looking for ... this?

<http://wp.netscape.com/download/archive/client_archive70x.html>

NS 7.0, 7.0.1, and 7.0.2 for Mac OS 8/9.

ER . . uh . . no at the time I was not I just clicked on the throbber of my browser and then went to the NS 7 download page. I was not aware of
earlier versions . And when I did get OS 9.1 a few months back I had looked to update then. When I saw NS 7 was for OS X I then backtracked to NS 6. OK ? I suppose I would have assumed any other versions of NS 7 Had I known that other versions existed. Please forgive me for having a life away from the keyboard. MEA CULPA 8^}

All reports to the contrary must have omitted a crucial element. ( A silly little detail like an installation of OS X perhaps ! 8*} ) ( Just having fun here folks )

Just because you don't believe it doesn't mean it doesn't exist... One could equally say that you may have omitted a crucial element - research. 5 minutes of surfing found me the NS 7 dl for OS 8/9. I should know one exists, by the way, I run it every day.

OK you got me.

But the question arises again. Even if NS 7 worked with OS 9 given the processor speed range that most of us on this list probably use ( say
75 - 450 MHz ) wouldn't we still perceive it as slower than the browser we are used to? Again because of the code bloat .

No, not really. I've found that NS7 is pretty slick. It really isn't that much slower than NS 4. But that's ok. If you like running crappy, bug ridden, memory leaking, non-compliant to standards code, go ahead and keep running NS 4.x.

I have been with NS 6 for several months now. I changed when I got OS 9.1 at the time.

something with a better balance and fit to our old machines would probably serve us better for general surfing.

Overmatching of OS and other software has been well discussed here previously. And that's why some here still prefer 8.1 or 8.6 etc. .

Isn't that argument essentially just a self-reinforcing handicap? There's nothing wrong with arguing personal preference, and I'll be the first to join in for some things (like never ever EVER running virtual memory). But applying your personal preference to someone else isn't that smart - there are still PLENTY of people out there surfing the web on broadband connections with 68ks (Quadras, LCs, Performas, etc). Should they give it up because the rendering crawls on a 68k?

You left out the part where I implicitly and explicitly said that having several browsers on the HD was handy if you really needed to visit a site even if the bloatware ran slowly on your particular hardware configuration.

I am all for experimentation. No limits here other than the practical ones of what works and what does not. Over my years on the list it is only recently that I have been aware of folks running NS 7 with classic OS. I am not sure of what you mean by " applying " it was an observation.
My first years with a computer were with a non-Windowpain box with an excellent OS ( now mostly defunct) and this was a concern there too.
People with minimal hardware configs kept trying to run the latest and greatest with the oldest and weakest. They bragged about doing it for a while and then later whined about how bad it was. A balanced software/hardware match is nothing to ignore. And yet I have seen a lot of the same sort of complaints on this list over past years.

I have a friend who still uses said OS on a PC ! Now that flies ! Yam is his email client of choice. He is a veteran IT professional.And he is also fluent in Windowpain and Linux as well as a proprietary Unix based OS . For laughs, and because he can, he runs the original OS 9 from Tandy on both his PC and his old CoCo II. He even gets online with his CoCo ! I say whatever floats your boat !
But I'm not dusting off my Performa 630CD to surf eBay anytime soon.

Just food for thought.

Peace

Drew
