I can access the router through a hub, with the PC, but cannot

Possibilty 1:

The modem has seen and remembered the MAC address of the laptop. Since your cable service provider (ISP) has only authorized your account to talk to one and only one computer, that one MAC is it. Power-cycling the modem will make it forget which MAC it has seen...

Move the modem to the router.

Power-cycle the modem. Do this by unplugging the modem for about 30 seconds; just hitting the modem's power button isn't good enuf.

Wait for the modem to resynchronized with the cable system (all lights solid green).

Reboot the router, so it will pick up a fresh DHCP lease from the ISP.

Possibility 2:

Make sure your router is configured to provide local IPs and DNS forwarding to the computers on your LAN using DHCP, and that all the computers are set to use DHCP.

A PC friend said something about Macs and PCs cannot be on the same network
because they use different protocols.

*smirk*

My home network consists (today) of four desktop Macs, one PowerBook, a Win2k desktop, a Dell laptop (WinXP), a Xerox crayon pooper printer, and an Axis Print Server (two Epson printers). They play together quite nicely. Ok, well, if I ping-flood the Win2k machine it makes my housemate yell - his whole machine bogs down, making Freecell slow.

- Dan.
