I bought my Zip when they first came out and have had very little trouble with it. (Probably better built than the newer ones.) This little tip, which I picked up on the old JUIP.com website has worked for me and some others whom I've sent it to. It's supposed to be on the Iomega site also, though I never could find it. OK, here goes.
Power down the Mac. Let it completely shut down. Power up the Mac and immediately hold in the eject buttom on the front of the Zip drive. Hold the button in until the Mac completely finished booting(i.e. ready to use). This resets the drive heads in the Zip. I've had to do it to mine 2 or 3 times. Once I had to do it twice, back to back, but it worked. I've found it more common to have trouble with the disks than the drive. YMMV though. Also, while we're on the subject of Zip drives. Mine is a SCSI external Zip 100 and it "does" have an eject hole in the back right next to the second SCSI connector. Right side, looking at the back of the drive. HTH --Thanks; Rev.
