Hello listers,

Why would there be a special OS 8.6 CD for iMac? Isn't 8.6 just 8.6, and
any Macintosh capable of handling OS 8.6, iMac or not, should be able to
just install it?

As an update to my previous post, the Apple table I referred to is at:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25114

It shows which OS installs work on which machines. About halfway down is an entry for "iMac (Slot Loading)" which shows it works fully with OS9 and up, but 8.6 has a referral to note (3), which has the info:

"3. These computers are supported by the version of Mac OS included with the computer when it was purchased; retail copies of Mac OS with the same (or earlier) version number may not include the system software components necessary to start up these models. These computers are also supported by all subsequent versions of Mac OS."

The same logic applies to most of the newer machines too :)

There are also iMac "software restore" CDs, which restore the HD to the state it was when the machine came out of the box - It would include say, 8.6 as well as all the extras that came bundled with it, like nanosaur and so on.
