So let met get this straight. You act taken back because P2P is stealing yet you'll use a NON-US based service to get around US COPYRIGHT LAWS, and that's okay? Why don't you just use a foreign proxy if that makes you feel better about copyright infringement. That way you're technically out of the US. You know, where it's 'legal.'

After doing some further research, I can say that I'm on the fence on the issue of legality. Does anyone know what the real deal with this is? The whole scheme just seems kinda shady...

As I recall, it's a loophole in the Russian copyright law -- that says no royalties or permissions are required to "transmit" musics. They're intrepreting "transmit" to include "over the internet".

Rumour is that the RIAA paid a Russian legislator to introduce a bill that would "update" their copyright laws. But the legislator simply told everyone about the payoff then pocketed it.

The tracks you obtain are still not licensed to you here in the US. So don yer eye patch and grab yer parrot - technically, having them is illegal...

ObGrayAreaInDMCA: If you own the CD, is it legal to download one or more of its tracks from the Internet? The RIAA says it's illegal. Fair Use says it should be legal tho. This remains untested, AFAIK, in court.
