I have a similar setup except that my internal ATA drives are 40 and 80 gig.
I notice that your hard drives are quite small.
A few years ago I put a NEW 40-Gig ATA HD into a 400 MHz G3 6500 after the original 4-Gig ATA HD died.
The speed boost was immediate and dramatic.
Try it.
In terms of speed with most applications my old Sonnet-infested G4 PCI PowerMac is very similar in performance to my new G4 iBook.
