I fussed about the lines while trying to get Broadband because the cable modem could never get a signal. Whatever they did really cleaned up the line, so I never get anything less than 48K now.

I agree. When I had an iMac, I lived in a 30-year old condo. I was lucky to get 28,800 on the internal modem or with my PC. Since I moved a few years ago, its around 48k-51k.
