Okay, I'm really feeling like a goob right now.
I was looking at the way the SCSI cable is installed in the case and disconnected the HD, and CDROM to get a clearer picture of how the cable is connected and threaded in the case; I reconnected everything and restarted. . and got a gray screen. After fiddling around, I realize that there's a problem with the CDROM in the SCSI chain that's stopping the startup process (chime, everything except the CDROM powers up and then the gray screen).
BTW, all termination and IDs are at factory defaults.
I've checked to make sure everything is connected at both ends and was able to get the CD tray to open once, but nothing since then. I've disconnected the CDROM so that I can start up the machine and use it; but now, I don't have the CDROM to use.
What could I have possibly done to end up with a
non-functioning CDROM?
Help!!!
Check the power connector (the 4 wire one) and verify it is tight. Over time, the metal connectors will expand and become loose. You probably bumped it pulling the SCSI cable off, and that would be enough to open the connection.
