. . .I've checked to make sure everything is connected at both ends and was
able to get the CD tray to open once, but nothing since then. I've
disconnected the CDROM so that I can start up the machine and use it; but now, I don't
have the CDROM to use.

What could I have possibly done to end up with a non-functioning CDROM?>>
---------------

Check to make sure the HD that is connected at the end of the SCSI cable. It
may be possible to connect the CD-ROM to the end connector on the SCSI cable
and still have the terminated HD plugged into another connector on the SCSI
cable. This could account for the gray screen.

Also check that the CD-ROM connection is properly seated; both sides of the
connector all the way in and parallel the back of the drive. Make sure you do
not have any bent SCSI pins on the back of the CD drive.

If you have a second HD connected on the internal chain make sure ONLY the
drive connected at the end of the cable is terminated. HD's may or may not be
terminated by factory settings.

The CD-ROM tray dysfunction you describe could be caused by a bad power
connection as stated in an earlier post or could be a slight alignment problem of
the top cover or the metal shielding in front of the CD-ROM which can get in
the way of the eject button on the cover. --glen (digest mode)
