--- I letter concerns the cache. My mac has a 256k
external cache and no backside(0k) cache. How high can
caches go? Which is more important-external or
backside? BTW-What do they do? They relate to ram?
processor?
 8600 400Mhz 608MB ram 9.1  4 hardrives(SCSI,
firewire, ATA, and original. Sweating up a storm in S.Texas>>David

L2 caches go up to 1 MB but these are harder to find. A 516 can
usually be found easily on the swa[p list or eBay.

The L2 cache holds instructions that are most used by the processor .
So that it doesn't have to be read again from the hard drive.
They are closer to the processor and therefore faster . I think they
go at processor speed..  Even the small one you have is an
improvement.
BUT if you are using an accelerator the L2 slot should probably
remain empty as the cache is usually on the card.
