Hello Bruce,
Thanks for your comment. I have been seriously considering doing what you suggested! This old router I got from the SwapList is becoming a nightmare. I was at OfficeMax yesterday, but they only had two routers to choose from, one for over $50.00, and the other was $100.00
Does it really matter what kind of new router I get? Will it still be compatible to get my older Macs online (PowerBook 540c, PowerMac 7300/500), and of course I need to get my new G4 1Ghz iBook online through the router as well.
It really doesn't matter. All the router 'sees' is ethernet connections. It doesn't care of the ethernet packets come from a mac, a PC, or a really, really, well trained duck with a highly modified Commodore 64...
But will all routers pass AppleTalk packets?
I don't know if this will be an issue for you but I would guess that it might be with Powerbook 540c. I know some wireless routers won't pass AppleTalk from the wired to wireless sides but I have no idea if any of the wired only routers have problems with AppleTalk...
