Yes, 10.0 is in all fairness pretty poor, especially compared to more recent versions of OS X. You'd be better off trying to find a cheap copy of 10.2.x - it's a good version to start on, 10.3 is better but it's still at current prices. My 9600 (G3/300 card installed) only runs 564MB but it's a server so it doesn't get interacted with a whole lot.
