Yes, 10.0 is in all fairness pretty poor, especially compared to more recent versions 
of OS X. You'd be better off trying to find a cheap copy of 10.2.x - it's a good 
version to start on, 10.3 is better but it's still at current prices.

Asa far as the G3 upgrade goes that should not be an issue - although you will need to 
download software to get the L2 cache working.

Yes. Keep it all separate.

Would be a start, if you can find the upgrade CD. 10.1.5 was the first useful 
itteration of OS X IMHO.

512MB minimum for a workstation. As much as you can get really. My 9600 (G3/300 card 
installed) only runs 564MB but it's a server so it doesn't get interacted with a whole 
lot. It's a bit sluggish running stuff like Safari, but that may be partly the CPU.
