The term "flashing" refers to writing new "code" to a programmable chip on the logic board of the device. The only ones I have personally done allowed me to upgrade a couple of Global Village modems from 28k to 33k. Generally, there is a utility program that allows one to access the device through some interface/dialog and transfer a file of code to the "EPROM" chip on the device. Most of the dialog I have seen on this forum relates to providing code to certain video cards to allow them to be "converted" from PC use to Mac use.
