The term "flashing", more appropriately termed "FLASHing", comes directly
from the memory chip technology, FLASH memory.

This is a very fast read, very fast write, non-volatile memory technology.

Earlier EEPROM technology was very fast read, very slow write,
non-volatile.

The still earlier EPROM technology was not programmable or writable,
except in a special programming device. It was very fast read, however.

The "27" series chips are usually EPROMs.

The "28" series chips are usually EEPROMs.

The "29" series chips are usually FLASHes.
