256M is a bit on the low side, as Unix will take up as much of your
RAM as possible for Virtual Memory and other neat stuff.  with a Unix
OS, I would have at least 512M.

Of course, it may also have something to do with the I/O - is the
external machine that house the OS connecting to the machine via
Firewire or USB?  Also is the drive a slower drive (i.e. a 5400 rpm
instead of 7200 rpm)?
