Perhaps an attempt to upgrade its ROM failed for a number of reasons.

I had a Mac 2940UW (not U2W) card that was DOA - black screen at bootup.
First I mounted it to a PC and flashed it with a PC ROM. This allowed my
7600 to bootup normally with it. Then I re-flashed with Adaptec's Mac ROM.
It's been on the 7600 since.
