Hi, people.
Well, hello there!
I am wondering about usb support on MAC OS 9.x computers. I'd like to know if the MAC OS 9.1 (which is the system I'm using) supports USB 2.0.
No, it only supports USB 1.1
Or isn't it nothing to do with the software but with hardware? Do pre-G3 machines support USB 2.0?
It is the USB drivers - a software issue, making USB 2.0 not available on MacOS 9 systems. Any machine that has a 32 bit PCI slot and can run OS X at a reasonable speed can use USB 2.0. That said, any RISC 604 or 604e / 604ev CPU (pre G3) may technically be able to run OSX, but I am sure the speeds would be horrible and so slow that it wouldn't be worth even trying.
Please note though that you can use USB 2.0 cards in a Power Mac 9600, but the card will be in USB 1.1 mode and you won't get better than USB 1.1 speeds. A lot of the minimum requirements on the USB boxes state a G3 or better is required - but in reality only a 32bit PCI slot is needed.
You could get USB 2.0 to work on your machine if you buy a G3 or G4 CPU upgrade card, and install MacOS X into your computer.
As for firewire, I have no clue as I don't have a firewire card. I would however seriously consider buying a B&W G3 for it's 100MHz bus... rather than the 9600's 50Mhz bus.
Hope this helps,
