>> How long should a low level format of a 160 Gig hard ATA Seagate drivetake? My 6500 has been at it for 13 hours. The drive is suspect.
Thanks, David

What are you using to format it? Why not stop and restart and see if the Apple Utility notices it as a drive in need of initializing?
If so, it'll do that so you can have it mounted and then test it with Norton.
Well, I did stop it. Yes, it recognizes it and formats it. I can write to it. I am installing OS 8.6 on it and will try running it for a bit like that. What it did on the HP a420n is allowed me to do a system restore which is my only option for reinstalling a system without buying an OS. Gawd why do people by these boxes? But crashed during Windows XP Service Pack 2. And would not reboot. Again, this was a replacement sent by HP for what there support staff diagnosed as a bad hard drive.
New update, maybe the damn thing is bad. The OS 8.6 install just said there is not enough room, says I need another 2485099K. That's on a 160 gig drive that the Mac formatted to 137.9 gig.
Sounds like HP needs to send me another drive.
Sorry for the OT. Would still like to know how long the LL format should have taken.
The problems you are having is because you interrupted the LL format, are running a drive too large for the built-in IDE interface in the 6500, and have a conflict between the HP Windows install and the SP2 update. For the disk, your options are to install it into the PC and perform a LL format there (assuming it can access the full drive) or buy a PCI-ATA card that supports drives larger than 128 GB and do the LL format there, or swap the drive again and promise not to do a LL format on the replacement. The LL format most likely stalled because the drive is larger than 128 GB and the older IDE interface in the 6500 can't support it.
As for the Windows update problem, I charge $65 / hour for that work. As a guess, the customized XP install for the HP has a conflict with the SP 2 update - or - the old drive was fine but the IDE interface/motherboard is having problems. Did you try and re-restore from the HP disks before doing the LL format?
