Hi,
Finally had the chance yesterday to open it up. Not the easiest thing in the world. The power plug is fixed in place along with the data cable at the rear of the unit. Managed to pull the drive out, reseat and put it all back together but no change. Could it be one of the low voltages? Now i'm sorry my multimeter is at work!

It CAN be likely that the CD has indeed died. If you have another Mac around or a PC
that you can hook it to the power plug, that little 4-pin connector, and just try to open and
close the tray, this will tell you if it lives or not.
