Finally had the chance yesterday to open it up. Not the easiest thing in the world. The power plug is fixed in place along with the data cable at the rear of the unit. Managed to pull the drive out, reseat and put it all back together but no change. Could it be one of the low voltages? Now i'm sorry my multimeter is at work!

Before you decide to throw it out try cleaning all of the cable ipns and sockets as well as the connectors on the board and drive with contact cleaner.
