Hey folks, I'm not too familiar with SCSI's so bear with me here if my questions sound a bit elementary. I have a 9500 and for the life of me I'm having headaches trying to attach an 18GB hard drive (80pin w/a 50/60 pin adapter) to it. This hard drive would be the only hard drive on the system. I also wanted to attach a Toshiba 40X CD-ROM drive to it (50 pin).
First question: I've read that SCSI devices need termination if they are the last one on the "chain". So where on the ribbon is the last device? Is it the connection closest to the motherboard connector (the one closest to the end that plugs into the motherboard) OR is it the connector at the other end of the ribbon? I'm trying to figure out whether I should terminate the SCSI CD-ROM or terminate the hard drive. On the ribbon being used, the SCSI CD-ROM is connected to the connection right after the motherboard connector and the hard drive is at the end of the ribbon. Second question: I know that this 18GB drive along with the adapter works because I've plugged it into my Adaptec 2906 card in my B&W and I was able to format it successfully in OS 9.2.2. My 9500 also has an ATA card that I've attached an IDE CD burner to it (one that's fully supported in OS 9). When I boot up the OS 9.1 install CD using the IDE CD burner, the 18 GB drive (which is the ONLY device attached to the onboard SCSI port) doesn't even mount on the desktop (but it did in my B&W). I've attached the drive to the end of the ribbon. When I try to use drive setup it sees the hard drive and says that it can be initialized. After I set it for 1 partition Extended format and I try to format it , I get a failed format message. I know the adapter doesn't have any pins that terminate it and I tried terminating the drive using it's own jumpers but I keep getting either the same failed message OR formatting just hangs. Any ideas as to why? I've tried formatting this drive while using the Toshiba SCSI CD-ROM and the install CD wouldn't even boot.
