Right-o. Well, ask a "dumb" question [smirks]...

Okay, if you're asking about this from a purely hardware perspective, the
below link should tell you all you need to know:

http://tinyurl.com/553y6

The pics you need are in the upper right-hand corner of the page. As you
can see, the ADB connector has one more pin than the LocalTalk connector.
If you were Morbidly Interested, I could prolly tell you what the different
pins do and and all of that krep. However, I would need to dig through my
stuff. I can't 'member it offhand 'cause it's been so long.

Data point: technically speaking, you're looking for a LocalTalk cable.
AppleTalk is a set of proprietary protocols that Macs use to share files
with each other, much like TCP/IP is the set of protocols that computers on
the Internet use to communicate. The Mac OS attaches to the protocol
(AppleTalk), which then connects to the hardware layer (LocalTalk) to make
the needed connection.

>From a "purely functional" perspective, you can prolly do what you need to
do the cheapest using PhoneNet connectors. PhoneNet is (pretty much) the
same thing as AppleTalk, but the cable used is *unshielded* voice-grade
twisted pair (versus shielded twisted pair for LocalTalk). Only you can
decide if using unshielded cable is or is not a big deal in the particular
environment you're operating in.

However, if this is a long term thing, rather than a quick-and-dirty ad-hoc
arrangement, I definitely recommend using LocalTalk cabling
because...because...well, it looks cooler. Houseguests are much more
impressed by LocalTalk cable dangling from your ceiling than they are by
regular ol' phone line. Yes, I speak from experience on this (don't ask).

Doing a WTB: localtalk/phonenet posting on the Swap List will prolly "net"
you many responses.

[picks up Plexiglas shield to deal with the "responses" concerning that
awful pun].

James Fraser
