So am I to understand that I just can't install an internal ide cd/dvd
player in the computer and get it to work?

I got one to work on my 7300, using an ACARD SCSI-IDE "bridge" to convert
it (the Pioneer DVR-105) to SCSI, and a Radeon 7000 to decode the DVD
data stream.

In this configuration, the audio comes in over the SCSI bus, so you may
also need CD-ROM Speedtools to handle the DVD and its audio.

Sure, the total cost ... now ... is more than the cost of a barebones B&W
which is already capable of playing DVDs.

But, it is possible.

Oh, Toast will burn CDs on the DVR-105, also using the ACARD adapter.

The ACARD adapter supports 48-bit LBA, so you can put a 250 GB UATA drive
on your legacy machine. One "bridge" per drive.

Imagine that ... a terabyte of data on a 9600, and still having several
free drive slots and no PCI slots used for UATA cards (although the 9600
will support four UATA cards).
