The cases are indeed identical, as are nearly everything else.

The 9600 motherboard uses the same single M3.5-0.6 retaining screw, but 
the number and position of the plastic board retaining hooks is different.

Obviously, the case is punched for both the 8600 and the 9600 retaining 
hook positions.

To put a 9600 in an 8600 case, you'll need to cover the A-V area opening 
and the video area opening, if you want.

To put an 8600 in a 9600 case, you'll have to remove the A-V cover and 
punch out the video cover.
