I'm coming in late on this....I have a Performa 6400 with a G3 upgrade, running OS 9.1 Earthlink tells me I need OS 10 at a minimum to connect to their DSL line. Is that not true? Can I hook up running 9.1 with an ethernet card simply by setting up thru TCP and not dealing with all their install stuff?
Assuming it's like Earthlink was last I dealt with them, you will need some software or hardware. Earthlink uses PPPoE, a vile utterly useless abomination. You either need PPPoE software on the Mac or a router. I tried setting up PPPoE software on an 8500 running OS 9.X but could never get it to run reliably. I eventually put in an Asante router which worked well. The main problem is that the PPPoE clients for Mac OS 9 are lousy software.
You are generally best off NOT installing an ISPs software. Among other things they almost always set your browser to point to their home page which is totally unnecessary. If you want to try the PPPoE in software then see if you can just install that part.
