So the RED wire is 12v (runs the ATA drive), and the YELLOW is 5v? I  
have a fan hooked up to the YELLOW one (apologies for using CAPS, I'm  
not yelling) ...

I believe I wouldn't  mind the fan continuing to run ...
Would that be OK?
How can I drill such a large hole in the 8500's casing ... it seems  
like a very hard steel ... and I need a 3/4 inch opening for my switch  
... maybe a smaller switch, not lighted would be better ...

Suggestions?

Sure, but do turn off both the +12 volts (pin 1) and the +5 volts (pin
4), not just the +5 volts.
