Anyway either with the original installed 8.5.1 HD and system, or with a the internal drive formatted and reinstalled with 8.5: I can't boot with extensions enabled.

try format the drive again make sure to do it with the disktool and all the lowlevel and write 0 options checked, sometimes formatting fails with this result.
a flakey pram battery will sometimes result in corrupted pramdata in a way that it
will also have this affect.
when this happened at my friends place the startup after zapping the pram worked nice, but the second restart from cold produced the error,
also the filestructure on the hard disk was damaged every time the start up failed, I new battery did the trick, there was no loss of date or time settings.


what about norton diskdoctor or diskwarrior - did you check with those ?
