Anyway, I'm thinking LCD now, but I'm afraid I haven't kept up with the

A DVI-VGA adapter is bout $5-10, and no problem. Plug that into your Mac-VGA adapter and you have an unwieldy pile of adapters but it'll work. Besides, probably the majority of LCD panels on the market are VGA anyway.

I assume I want an active matrix...do they even
make passive any more?

No, they don't.

What's a good price for a 17"?

It varies. $250-$300 is what I see all the time.

Can I use a monitor
meant for a PC?

With an adapter, and as long as your video supports the resolution and refresh they need. Typically they work at only one resolution and refresh rate; they're not typically switchable, especially at the low end.

Is it worthwhile looking on eBay?

Is anything? <shrug> You can usually find decent deals (with rebates) in places like Office Dept, Office Max, CompUSA, Fry's etc, if you have one near you.

Do they ship well (that
is, are they fragile?)

Properly packed they're not fragile at all.
