Krow Magnum reassured me about my FrankenMac aspirations thusly:

The 52xx is the same form factor and putting a 54/5500 or 64/6500
board into a 52xx will work.
The 52xx series has no PCI slots if I remember and there may be a
voltage problem using a PCI card on a swapped logic board in the 52xx
Macs.
-------
Evidently the PSU is up to the task. A 5400 board currently resides in a 5215 case, and I have it connected to my home test network via PCI ethernet card. IIRC, the 52xx series boards had a comm slot and PDS, so maybe that almost equals CS II and PCI...?

The 6500 backplate (metal) will not fit anything but a 6400 or 6500.
If your putting a board into a 52xx just use the OEM backplate from
the 52xx on the 6500 board or any 54/5500 backplate will work also.
The plastic rear covers will fit over any board with the correct
backplate.
_______
I guess a prior owner already switched in the 5400 metal backplate, as everything seems to fit just fine. Looks like I'm good to go when that 6500/250 mobo arrives - what a *HUGE* improvement over the original 75 MHz Road Apple that will be...!

Thanks for dispelling my fog of confusion 8^P
