Problem:

Logitech USB Optical Mouse only has full functionality when hot plugged into
usb port. When I start up the computer "cold" the mouse only has one button
clickability (...is that a word?). If I pull the plug out and then plug it
back in "hot" with the computer on then the mouse works fine with all three
buttons and click wheel working as they should. I don't recall what kind of
USB PCI card I have in this 9600;I'm pretty sure it is the old standard 1.1
and the mouse behaviour is the same in both ports. OS8/9 Logitech software
seems to have installed correctly and computer seems stable otherwise.

Things I've missed:

Is it possible to use the mouse without the software? I mean, unless
it's one of those mice with like five buttons, you probably don't need
the driver. Mice are pretty much standardized. For instance, I plugged
my PC's USB mouse into a Mac USB port once and it worked perfectly (and
right-click did Control-click, too--that was a nice bonus).

This is true with OS X, but not OS 8/9 which did not directly support two button mice. With OS X 10.3 a two button scroll wheel mouse is directly supported without the need for any drivers. Obviously this reduces by one the number of third party items you have to have installed.

Change is inevitable - The struggle is optional.
