As a side not, pull the board out. Extricate the scsi cable from under the speaker. Put the board on top of the CD with the power connectors facing the read of the computer. This way you can hook up everything but the AV ports and boot the machine.

I'm putting some recently acquired upgrades in my 8500 server and when
ever I don't have a display attached the the built in video the startup
bong comes out as a dull click and a little humming sound. And then is
freezes after the desktop patters is drawn but before the Mac OS Face
is drawn prior to extensions loading.
8500/120 Sonnet G3-400-1M 320MB 4.3 GB SCSI OS 9.1
What did you put in as upgrades? If Ram, do check with Gauge Pro or pull
some and see what stabilises the machine. Bad ram can do such things. Did
you press the cuda button after fitting stuff? Your SCSI IDs set right?
