While my experience with DSL did require some programming of the modem either via a webpage or configuration software, my cable modem does not. It does everything it needs to do on it's own whether a computer is attached or not. From that point all you need to do is plug in a DHCP aware computer. The first connection to my modem is a IIci with IPNetRouter software. That plugs to a switch and serves ethernet to my two Macs and a Windoze box. Using IPNetRouter I can simultaneously serve the internet over LocalTalk to my compact Macs. There should be no reason that it would only work on Windoze, in fact the installer that ran the cable for me recommended that I NOT install the software.
