> From: Andrew Conachey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> internal Global Village Teleport Platinum V modem. ... Since I didn't get the original install CD with the computer, I installed a copy of 7.6 from a retail CD I had and upgraded to 7.6.1. ... whenever I plug in the phone line into the computer it automatically "connects" and won't hang up. I am very sure (to my knowledge of PPP 1.1.1 and TCP/IP control panels) that some piece of software is not automatically connecting the modem. This is very annoying since I can't leave the phone line plugged into the computer all the time, because if I do the phones in my house will blare that annoying "the phone is off the hook you idiot!" tone. I went to global village's web site to download the drivers for this modem, but found out from them that I needed to download the Apple Telecomm software since their drivers don't apply to their modems that Apple shipped with their systems. This I did. Still have the same problem. Removed the modem from the comm slot and reinserted it.=20 Same problem. I can get on the internet if I quickly connect right after I plug in the phone line, but I would prefer to leave the phone line hooked into the computer all the time. I could do this with my Teleport Gold II on my Performa 6200CD.
What happens if you start with extensions off? Check the start up folder in your system folder (if you have one in 7.6) and remove anything. I take it that you have fresh everything from CD. You have a loaded only when needed option on your TCP panel. I have mine ticked. (BTW, I unplug my line from my machine whenever I don't want to be on line. In my case the modem is external and easy to access. My daughter does same with a PC and internal modem but I put a connector for her that is away from the computer and accessible... I once had a modem fry from one nearby flash of lightening and am scarred for life with the experience... so, if your problem cannot be solved, you have the means - especially with your clever "quickly connecting" technique - to handle the situation.) -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
