Hello: As others have stated, you do need to install USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1 in any pre-USB Mac. There have been conflicting reports over the years of people using later versions of the software, but for best results, I would stick to this... it works.

I have been using a SIIG two-port card in my 8500 for two years now. After researching for some time, I was told this was the most compatible USB card for the old er PCI Power Macs. One issue I have, is that I do not keep the USB extensions activated all the time, because when I do turn them on, I have sound problems - my external speakers do not work. I just activate the extensions when I need to use the USB ports, ie when needing to access files from my Sandisk USB drive or when I want to burn some files from my HP USB burner. I do not believe the SIIG card is made anymore as I do not see it on their site. Mine was purchased from Buy.com for the low price of $8.00 with free shipping! Belkin makes a compatible card.
