You may have disturbed a RAM stick or one may be damaged or faulty, try reseating. Try yanking some out and leaving some etc. Try Gauge Pro to test. Look up profiler when you are turned on to see that it at least says what the ram is as you know it to be. When you restart after this fault (presumably you yank the power off at the house switch?) does it start with Disk First Aid? It sounds as if the instruction to shut down is putting it in a sleep mode? If it is not a RAM prob, check for system corruption? Can you replace it with a backup copy?
