I am experimenting with an Adaptec 2940U2B SCSI card in a 7300 with a 405 MHz processor. I have an 18G IBM HD connected to it with an 80 to 68pin adaptor. The HD is partitioned into 2 vols. Copying from one to the other is not so impressive, in fact, it does not seem any faster than when the HD was on the normal internal O SCSI bus...
A zipped 70 MB file (Z-Mac OS 9.1 Update.smi) took 13 secs. This is aprox 5MB a sec. A folder I have with lots of folders and stuff within ran at about 1 MB a sec in copying from one vol to the other. If this is the best I can get on this card, I am going to yank it out and use the PCI slot for a more useful purpose (like putting my third screen back on a video card). Yes, that is a threat, so there! I was expecting to be impressed! Truth is, I was not that unhappy with the speed of the internal SCSI 0 bus - slow but not like bus 1 (which tries my patience for any external HD (but quite tolerable for zips, scanner and burner)) This slow speed may be due to the cable which has an active termination built in the end? Or something else to do with configuring jumpers or the adaptor? It is the only device on the card and works fine in terms of starting and use. Do these figures surprise anyone (5 MB per sec at best)? David Elmo -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
