Hi there,

I recently found a DDYS-T18350 18.2 GB hardisk made by IBM. This
harddisk uses a SCA plug to connect to the SCSI controller, but the
build-in controller of my Mac 7300 has a 50-pin connector. Can I use an
adapter (SCA to 50-pins) to run this harddisk in my Mac? Do I have to
install the HardDiskToolkit as well? I am unsure if this harddisk is
supported and I could not find any information about this.

Yes, you can use an adapter to use this drive in your Mac. I have used many SCA drives in different Macs (6100s, 9500 and currently in my beige G3). Just remember that SCA drives are a little more touchy about jumper settings and have a couple of more options than regular SCSI drives, so do not get discouraged if the first or second attempt at jumper settings does not work. I have had to try up to 4 or 5 times to get one to work, but once it is running, there are usually no problems at all with the drive.

SCA drives are designed for server use, so they tend to be better built than regular SCSI drives and generally last longer.

Odds are good that the drive is not supported by Apple's Drive SetUp. You may need HardDisk Toolkit to format the drive, but once it is formatted, you won't have any problems. Also, people have hacked Apple's Hard to work with various unsupported drives. I think my hacked version will format your drive. If you want it, email me off list and I will send it to you. It is about 210k in size, so pretty easy to download even on dialup.
