I have 3 9500's with 2 SCA drives each in them. They all work fine, and I didn't have to use any funny drive tools to format them. 1 has Linux on it, the other have OS X 10.2. Oh, and a couple used in external cases...
I think it may depend upon the adapter used. I have had no trouble with the adapters I've used, some are flat, and some are like an elbow. Space may be the only issue, whether the adapter will fit in there...
