Its worth a try... The drive wont even recognise a HFS+ CD.

Talking about cleaning DVD/CD drives now:
1) Use a can with compressed air AND a long (20 cm) blowpipe.
2) Bring in the blowpipe at the left or right (so not in the
middle) of the
drive till almost the backside. Be aware to keep open the lid of a
"sucker"
(= slotloader). Now you will remove most of the dust/nests.
3) Use now the cleaning CD.
I "saved" a lot of drives that way.
BTW: That can with compressed air can be of great help and use with
floppy-,
zip-, jaz-, syquest-, MO-drives etc. too.
