It took some time to track down, not least because my Arch Linux system locked up when trying to compile with -fanalyzer until I removed all other gcc options (and even then it locked up on some modules) and I had to keep power cycling. Anyway, I think this was in fact a false positive, that is, a case that could never occur in practice. Nevertheless, I have put a test for NULL in the relevant place, and gcc has stopped complaining.
